Sailing Yacht "OZ" - The Restoration
A rebuild by Tom & Sheila Boyce - September 1998 -
November 2000
"Oz," an 87' steel-hulled
ketch, was designed by Don Brooks and built New Zealand
in the early '80s. We joined Oz as crew for the third
owner who purchased her in September 1998.
Extensive rust in her steel hull led to the complete
14-month rebuild which is illustrated here. We
oversaw over 40 subcontractors to complete this $2.7
million job in surprising time.
A view of the bilge before the work. The bilge cleaned up after! The bow is sandblasted and surveyed for rust damage. The bow with the rusty steel removed. Installing the new steel plate. New bow thruster installed. Tearing off the rotting teak decking. Fairing the deck for installation of the cork decking. The Gardner diesel engine is the only thing that was not replaced. Scenes from the engine room - before. Scenes from the engine room - before. Replacing the wall of the engine room. Accessing the engine room. The beautiful, well-organized engine room designed by Tom - after. Brand new equipment fills the engine room. The V-Berth guest cabin has quite a view!

The hull before with survey marks showing the rusted out areas that will have to be replaced. Markings on the hull indicate plate that needs to be removed. 80% of the hull had to be replaced. Before the plate could be replaced the ribs and stringers that supported it were replaced. The hull is replated, faired and painted - ready to return to the water for the completion of the interior.
